The old Apache middle school running track and football field (Martin Luther King Jr Parkway and Avenida Escuela) are going through some major improvements. The City of Sierra Vista acquired the property from the school district a couple years ago, and own all those sports amenities.

You're going to see an awesome new field behind Apache with bleacher seating for a lot of people. It will be a football field and also a soccer field. The track will also be updated and available for people who like to walk and run. The track will be gated off but there will be public availability. There will be LED lighting throughout that complex.

The current work is a follow up to the first phase of an energy initiative the city did in 2019 when they upgraded the Sears Center Soccer Complex and the Domingo Paiz Soccer Complex. They're artificially turfed, marked for tournament play, and are really easy to maintain. These previous improvement helped the city generate about $3.3 million in economic impact locally by attracting 28 additional tournaments and about 11,940 visitors over a period from 2019 to 2020. The work that is going on now is the next phase of that energy initiative and the city has once again partnered with Snyder Electric to do these sports improvements. In addition, there are also more improvements planned throughout the city.

There are also updates planned for other city facilities. City hall is getting new roof. The cove is getting some really big improvements that are going to save a lot of water and energy. Also, general updates including smart irrigation citywide, EV chargers and more.

Altogether these projects are going to help the city save about 6 million gallons of water each year and a lot of energy. The city financed the improvements through municipal facility revenue bonds. They then pay it off with a portion of the city sales tax dedicated capital improvements, so there's no new tax burden on local taxpayers. These improvements are going to be completed over an 18-month period.
