When I was a young boy, my dad wrote a song about how much he loved my mom. Specifically, how talented she was at her couponing game. "Coupon Clipping Honey" went triple platinum in our household, backed by the incredible savings we were getting while shopping.

My father's dream of a couponing utopia is coming to an end, unfortunately, and Walmart is leading the charge.

Overage is Out

After leaving their coupon policy alone for over six years, Walmart has finally made a change, and not one you'll like. The first change is the elimination of "overage" when using coupons.

Unlike many other stores, if a coupon's value is greater than the product's price, Walmart would pay you the difference in cash. That policy is no more, as the company stated “Walmart does not give cash back nor will any overages apply to the remaining items in the transaction if the value of a coupon is greater than the purchase value of the item.”

They also added on to this, a limit of four for identical coupons per household, meaning you can't stack 10 to walk away with a brand new TV and fifty bucks anymore.

Overrides are Gone Too

The change that will likely upset the most people though, is the removal of the override system. Anyone who's ever used a coupon before knows the fear that it may be out of date. Luckily for them, Walmart had an override system for this. Manufacturer's coupons, and expired coupons were both accepted, with approval, under the earlier rules, but no more.

The new rules state that if the coupon does not scan in their system, then it is not valid. This completely kills the coupon game at all their locations, and will likely dive a lot of business away as a result.

Walmart has been plagued with issues these past few years, driving customers away in droves. Whether it be the lack of in-person cashiers or locking up even the most mundane items, people have stopped seeing Walmart as a beacon of cheap and easy shopping. This is likely to add onto that disappointment.
