Have You Bought This Recalled Meat In Arizona?
Arizona is no stranger to food recalls. It seems that every couple of weeks a new food has been contaminated or damaged to a point that it must be pulled off shelves.
For the most part, these issues are caught by the USDA, and taken care of swiftly. They didn't do their job this time.
What is Being Recalled?
A shipment of over 20,000 pounds of frozen raw beef has been recalled across the United States. Shipped from Uruguay, the meat primarily was sold in Arizona, California, Oregon, and Washington.
You can find the recalled products HERE.
While no illnesses have been reported due to consumption of the product, consumers are urged to look out for these products and avoid them at all costs until the issue is resolved.
Why Are These Meats Being Recalled?
While many food recalls are caused by a contamination, such as Salmonella and E.coli, this recall is a step behind that. The meats may be contaminated, but they also might not be. So what's the issue?
As stated before, these meats were imported from Uruguay, and as part of the import process, are meant to be inspected upon entry to the United States by the Food Safety and Inspection Service.
During FSIS surveillance, it was noticed that the meats did not go through an FSIS Import Reinspection, making the product incredibly dangerous for consumers.
Whether these meats are contaminated or not, the lack of a safety inspection is a big issue. If this begins to become normalized, more and more contaminants could make their way to store shelves, and no one would be the wiser.
