Just like the annual resurgence of the flu, new COVID strains should eventually be covered by vaccinations, but despite that, COVID still makes the rounds every year, just like the flu and common cold do.

The New Covid Strain
The latest COVID strain has been dubbed JN.1, and it's bringing some new features to the list of symptoms, along with a fresh set of concerns. The symptoms usually appear between two and fourteen days following exposure, and many are easily confused with signs of a cold or flu.
According to the CDC, typical Covid symptoms include:
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Fatigue
- Muscle or body aches
- Headache
- New loss of taste or smell
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
Arizona Citizens See a New Variant and New Symptoms
The latest iteration of Covid, JN.1, is a subvariant of the Omicron variant, which showed up in the United States around 2021.
Yale Medicine reports that JN.1, first showed up in the U.S. in September 2023 and by now it's become the dominant version. According to Yale Medicine, around 44% of Covid cases are now JN.1.
How Bad is JN.1 Compared to Previous Covid Strains?
The good news is, cases of JN.1 don't seem to be more severe or risky than the other variants, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS).
The Weird New Symptoms Associated with the New Covid Strain
That said, Arizona patients report some strange new symptoms associated with the JN.1 Covid strain. Flu-like symptoms that range from fever and sore throat, to runny nose and headaches are typical COVID markers. Even loss of smell isn't as alarming as it once was.
There are a few unexpected and strange new symptoms that people are reporting when they come down with this new variant:
- Trouble Sleeping
- Heightened Anxiety
Most of the reports are anecdotal, so it's hard to say whether these symptoms are related to the virus itself, or stress about contracting the virus.
