Arizona's native fauna aren't exactly the nicest. From Rattlesnakes that can kill you in one bite to Tarantulas and Scorpions that sneak under your bedsheets in the middle of the night.

These critters inhabit many parts of America though, but there's one you want to avoid at all costs, and it's only found right here.

Gila Monsters

Arguably one of the closest things we have to real-life Dragons, Gila Monsters are a large, spotted/striped lizard that inhabits Mexico and Arizona. They are the only venomous lizard in the country, and incredibly dangerous to come in contact with.

These lizards are mostly active in the early mornings, when the heat has yet to reach its peak, and prefer to prey on small birds and their eggs. Their bite is incredibly quick and powerful, and can inject a lethal dose of venom in a prey's body within seconds, due to their uniquely grooved teeth.

Where Do Gila Monsters Reside in Arizona?

Southern Arizona is a hotbed for Gila Monsters, but they're not quite everywhere. They tend to prefer rockier regions, like Buttes and Canyons, but can also be found in Sonoran Desert Scrub, a favorite hiding place of these little rascals.

This means you likely have to keep an eye out for them when you're hiking around these parts. The Huachucas and surrounding areas are a breeding ground for rocky terrain and desert scrubs, making Cochise County a perfect settling place for these mid-sized venomous lizards.
