One of Arizona's greatest strengths is our diversity of wildlife. Despite being an arid desert, the state of Arizona hosts a wide variety of plant and animal life.

Despite this, most species we find here seem to fit the mold, all designed to survive in this harsh climate. There's one native species here though, that seems like they should never have found there way here.

What are Coatimundi?

Of all the mammals that inhabit Arizona, Coatimundi, or Coati, are arguably the most interesting. These creatures are in the Procyonidae family, the same that hosts Raccoons and Ringtail, designated by their snouts and bear-like features.

Coati tend to look very similar to the common raccoon, with mask-like features on their face and a long, slender snout. Their tails are a defining characteristic, mostly staying pointed up so other members of their social circle can spot them through bushes and long grass.

Where Can You Find Coati?

Despite their look, Coati are actually native to Arizona! They can primarily be found in Central and Southern America, but can be found as far north as the American Southwest. New Mexico and Texas hold a sizeable population, but Arizona is one of the more populous US states.

These critters can find habitats as far north as Flagstaff, but are primarily found a little more south. As they prefer rocky terrain and elevated altitudes, their exploits have brought them to Catalina, Patagonia, and Oracle lake. The Huachuca Mountains are also a hotspot for these cute little creatures, so next time you're up on a hike, keep an eye out for one of Arizona's most interesting animals.
