This Is Leading To More Rattlesnake Attacks In Arizona!
The Arizona deserts are home to plenty of creatures. Some hop, some sing, and some... kill.
Rattlesnakes are one of Arizona's most feared species, and a massive uptick in attacks has led experts to ask: why?
Why Are Rattlesnakes so Dangerous?
Rattlesnakes are not the only breed of snake in Arizona, but they are the most notable. These living noodles are chock full of deadly venom that works fast, like, really fast. The venom itself will damage any tissue it comes in contact with, as well as cause hemotoxicity. This ensures that your blood does not clot, causing more blood loss and less of a chance to counteract the venom.
The only way to counteract this reliably is antivenom, which is usually only available at the emergency room. Experts warn to throw out anything you've seen in movies and not suck the venom out. This is an unreliable method that can just lead to worse symptoms.
Why are They Everywhere?
This year so far, more than 100 rattlesnake bites have been reported across the state of Arizona, with a majority happening over the summer. Why is that? Dr. Megan Spyres of the Banner Poison Control Center believes it's monsoon season.
The moist, wet climate is perfect for reptiles, and snakes of all kind will take advantage of that. This also follows the study that showed that 90% of rattlesnake bites across the U.S. take place between April and October, peak monsoon season for the western states.
Remember, rattlers are more scared of you than you are of them, so if you see a snake, treat it like it is a rattlesnake, and leave it alone.
