College rebrands are nothing new. Arizona State has changed the "Sun Devil" logo more times than I can count, and The University of Arizona seems to be dedicated to changing everything about their branding every two weeks.

Norther Arizona University must have gotten jealous of their shiny new coats of paint, so they're joining the fun, in the most Flagstaff way possible.

Meet the Astrojacks

This fall, the NAU Lumberjacks are leaving the forests of northern Arizona behind in favor of the vast expanse of the cosmos. Created to honor the astronomical history of Flagstaff, the rebrand takes everything we know and love about NAU and adds a cosmic twist.

The logo will be shortened to just an "A", stylized as if it were placed on the side of the Saturn V rocket, and the primary colors will be slightly tweaked to a more space-themed pallet of Nova Navy, Stardust Gold, and Pluto Blue.

Lastly, Louie the Lumberjack (NAU's mascot) now has a new pal, as Blouie the Space Ox will be joining him as a secondary mascot for the University.

Why Rebrand?

Let's clear one thing up: this isn't a full on rebrand. Instead, this is a new athletic alternate, very similar to the University of Central Florida's "SpaceU" branding. NAU, as a university, will continue their standard branding, but athletic jerseys and merch will begin to feature this new interstellar look.

Flagstaff, and northern Arizona as a whole has incredibly close ties to space, not only discovering Pluto (still a planet in my eyes), but also being named the nation's first "Dark Sky City", taking a pledge to preserve the night sky with smart lighting policies.

Much like UCF, who resides less than 40 miles from Cape Canaveral, NAU wants to pay respects to the massive impact their community has had on astronomy, and I can't think of a better way than this.
