To an outsider, Arizona is nothing more than an unbearably hot state that resides in the middle of the desert. I am, of course, speaking from experience, but living here for the past year has shown me that couldn't be further from the truth.

One thing that shocked me more than anything else is the amount of snowfall Arizona gets, especially here in Cochise County. As we prepare for more flurries, here's how to stay safe on the road.

Things to Remember

As pretty as snowfall is, it can be incredibly dangerous, especially during your commute. The roads may freeze over, even partially, and make your drive a pain. It's incredibly important to remember to stay alert when you drive on icy roads, especially bridges, which can freeze over faster than regular roadways.

You want to also be sure you reduce your speed, your life isn't worth getting somewhere a few minute early, as well as driving when it's light out, as you'll have a better view of the road and any obstructions ahead.

What Not To Do

Driving cautiously is still not enough to stay as safe as possible, there are still plenty of things to avoid while driving through snowy/icy conditions. Firstly, never use Cruise Control, and never try to change lanes.

You should also stay as far away from the side of the road as you can, as this is where slush and ice accumulate, which could throw you wildly off course.

Luckily, the snow here in Cochise County is never as heavy or long-lasting as someplace like Chicago, but it's always smart to stay one step ahead of the curve and practice safe driving habits.
