Fall is finally here!  As the leaves begin to turn and the air gets a briskness to it, Arizonans are likely to be leaving their homes for the first time in months.

The weather finally becomes bearable again at this point in the year, and there's no better way to take advantage of this than by getting down and dirty in a garden of your own.

Getting Your Garden Set Up

Step one of building your perfect home garden is selecting the right spot. You'll want your garden to soak up about eight hours of sunlight, but ensure that there is tree cover or artificial shade nearby to keep the garden cool in the afternoon.

While you're absolutely free to begin your garden in the natural earth you've been provided with, I'd recommend starting off in containers, allowing you more control over your soil and plant location.

Lastly, make sure you have all your tools (Watering hose, shovel, spade, hoe, and wheelbarrow) and prepare your soil. This involves tilling about 10 to 12 inches, removing any debris such as rocks, and adding compost for healthy growing.

And last but not least, make sure to water the soil.

What to Plant

Now that your future garden is prepped for planting, it's time to pick out your crops! You may have certain fruits or veggies in mind, but it's important to remember that specific crops grow at specific times. As we're diving into the fall season, there's plenty of veggies and herbs that will thrive under cooler temperatures.

Carrots, Celery, and Broccoli will all grow perfectly, and can go towards a scrumptious soup to keep you warm as the temperatures drop. Peppers and Tomatoes are also perfect for this time of year, as are Peas, Lavender, and Beets.

Whatever you plan to grow, get outside and enjoy the fall weather with a garden of your own!
