Scams are not a new invention. We've been pulling them through all of human history, but since the invent of the internet, they've reached a totally new level.

These scams can impersonate anyone for the sole purpose of stealing your money, information, or anything in between, and now one of Arizona's major government offices is caught in the middle of one.

The ADOT Scam

Over the past few days, you may have received a text from the Arizona Department of Transportation, asking them to pay unpaid fees, or face legal action. The texts then include a link you're meant to click on with the thought that you can pay your fees through that website.

In reality, this site is run by the scammers, and will likely use it to steal any money or personal information you input. This scam would likely work wonders if not for a few simple (and incredibly stupid) mistakes the scammers made.

How Can You Tell It's a Scam?

Well, let's start with the obvious. The first thing that should tip you off is that the message is meant to be sent from AZDOT, which is not a real Arizona agency. Our department of transportation goes by the name ADOT.

The second (and funniest) part, is that these scams exclusively mention that you have unpaid tolls, which is funny, because Arizona DOESN'T HAVE TOLL ROADS. Anyone who's lived in this state for any amount of time should know that, and this should be your tip that this is nothing but fraud.

If you do receive one of these messages, do not click on the link, and report the message to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center.
