University Of Arizona Unveils Radical New Degree
The University of Arizona has stood as a pillar of education and knowledge for the Grand Canyon State since its founding in 1885.
As times have changed, so too, has the course load. New degrees, classes, and programs have been added through the years to keep up with a modern student body.
A new degree is on its way.
Degree in Midwifery
Midwives are some of the most underappreciated people in our medical system. While being vital to the process of childbirth, they are regularly put below other medical professionals on the staff. It's this lack of respect that leads most aspiring doctors and nurses to avoid the profession altogether.
It's because of this discrepancy between the two that the University of Arizona is launching a degree in Midwifery. This two year program will educate and train the next generation, and attempt to place them in residencies across the state.
Why is This Degree Coming?
A lack of midwives is an issue facing most of America, but Arizona has it particularly bad. In Graham County, for example, there is only one Certified Nurse Midwife, and many counties across the state have none whatsoever.
Even worse is the effects of this shortage. Between 2018 and 2019 Arizona saw 149 pregnancy related deaths, with around 90% of them being preventable, had a midwife been present.
This program isn't just about giving those interested in a career in midwifery a place to learn, it's about spreading awareness, and bringing more midwives to the state so more new families can leave the hospital happy and healthy.
