What's the point of an airport in a small community?

The Sierra Vista Municipal Airport does not have commercial flights, so what's the point? This airport does a lot for public wellness. It supports general aviation, military operations connected to nearby Fort Huachuca, medical flights, and visiting pilots who bring business and tourism to the area. It also receives a lot of planes dropping off packages and resources for the community.

The people who work at the airport are city employees who ensure that everything runs smoothly. They keep the runways clear, fuel the planes, and perform ground work that keeps people safe when they are in the air.

Fun Fact:  Bisbee and Douglas also have Municipal Airports!

Fueling Planes

People who work at the Sierra Vista Municipal Airport have a long list of responsibilities. One of these responsibilities is plane fuelling. Sierra Vista's Airport is home to two types of fuel: Jet A and AVgas. Jet A fuel looks exactly like what you'd expect fuel to look like: clear and yellow. The AVgas, on the other hand, is a bright blue color. Both are used by all sorts of aircraft that come through the airport.

Air safety starts during the fueling process. The technicians who fuel the planes go through a long checklist before allowing the fuel to enter an engine. They ensure there's no water condensation in the fuel, that there is no debris, and that the fuel is the correct temperature and density. If these boxes are checked off when they shouldn't be, the plane risks stalling midair, or even worse, the fuel can combust in a way it isn't supposed to, and the aircraft can catch on fire. That is why these guys' jobs are so important.

Fire Season and Emergency Services

The Sierra Vista Municipal Airport isn't just home to incoming packages; its hangars are also used by the US Forest Service and Emergency Services. The US Forest Service has a variety of aircraft they bring out during fire season. These planes and helicopters often need a place to hang out, land, and refuel in case an emergency requires them. Airport staff must coordinate closely with pilots to keep runways clear and fueling services ready so firefighters can respond without delay.

Emergency vehicles such as Lifeflight use the airport to fuel and store their aircraft as well. These helicopters are used by first responders when an ambulance isn't able to get to the scene, or a patient needs immediate transport to a hospital out of town. Without the Sierra Vista Municipal Airport, these services wouldn't be able to respond as quickly.
