In middle school, we were forced to read a book called "Uglies". The novel, written by Scott Westerfeld, was a story following a dystopian society, broken up between the "Uglies", and the surgically perfect "Pretties".

The novel's main purpose is to highlight the absurd value we place on beauty, and its effect and harm on those who seek it out.

Don't let the dystopian backdrop fool you, the exact same thing is happening here, today.

Seeking Beauty

Recently, a woman from Tempe wanted to change her look. Nothing too drastic, just a quick lip filler injection, something thousands of people do every year. Athena Zafirakis needed a hookup, so she reached out to her friend, who referred her to an absolute steal.

The provider, who advertised on Instagram, was offering a price of $300 per person. This was almost impossible to turn down, as most lip injections will run double or even triple that.

Of course, she booked the appointment.

Disaster Strikes

The signs should have been there, but Zafirakis had never gotten lip filler before, so she assumed everything was standard procedure. First off, a $50 CashApp deposit was required, and second off, the appointment was just at a house. No hospital, no med spa, a house.

When the procedure was finished, Zafirakis thought something was off. There was a bit of pain, but she expected it. What she didn't expect was a hard ball to form inside her lips a few days later. Luckily, she was able to break down the filler with hyaluronic acid enzyme.

It turns out, the woman providing the injection used a hyaluron pen. This is a device that pushes the filler into lips, but is entirely purposeless. The FDA has specifically warned about the dangers of this device all the way back in 2021.
