Insect Insanity: Why Bug Eaters Love Arizona
Imagine sitting down at a nice restaurant with your family and ordering a steak, medium-rare. They bring it out, you're so excited to chow down, but on the side of the plate is a cockroach the size of your hand. No, the kitchen didn't mess up, that's part of your order.
As bug eating grows more and more, the question becomes, "why would anyone willingly do that?"
Arizona has an answer.
Arizona Likes Eating Bugs
A survey recently conducted by LawnStarter (who else would you trust for all your bug related news?) asked which states prefer eating bugs, and Arizona ranked number 15 for our insect enthusiasm. Public interest was actually a little higher, as we ranked 12th in the country for interest on Google and other search engines.
There are already a boatload of eateries across the Grand Canyon State that specialize in dishes that creep and crawl, such as Las 15 Salsas in Phoenix or Tamales Guadalajara.
Why Eat Bugs?
Despite the common conception that bugs are dirty, disease ridden monsters, it's actually quite the opposite! Insects have been viewed as a welcome, if not wanted part of cuisine for multiple cultures throughout time, and if farmed correctly, can be just as safe, and tasty, as any steak you get at a 5-star establishment.
They aren't just for shock factor either, as most insects contain a not insignificant amount of protein, making bugs the largest source of the nutrient in the world, and by a country mile I might add.
