The Most TOXIC Insect In The World Lives Right Here In Arizona
Arizona is home to all kinds of wildlife. With a state full of biodiversity, we see a massive spread of animals, from champions of the sky to massive beasts of the land.
Despite the dozens of species we love to see, there are just as many dangerous critters that snip, snap, and bite, and one of the most toxic on earth makes its home right here in the Grand Canyon State.
What is the Maricopa Harvester Ant?
Found across the state of Arizona, the Maricopa Harvester Ant is among the most dangerous insects in the world. While it can be found across the Southwest United States and Northern Mexico, it is the most common in the Grand Canyon State.
They tend to nest in rocks and gravel, and make their homes in every nook and cranny in Arizona. Backyards, porches, and remote hiking trails are all perfect spots for these critters to call home.

The Venomous Bite of the Maricopa Harvester Ant
As I mentioned before, the venom of the Maricopa Harvester Ant is considered the most toxic on earth. It's believed they developed this strong deterrent to protect against rodents that may raid their nests. As such, the venom is particularly effective against mammals, meaning humans are incredibly susceptible.
The pain from these bites can last for around four to six hours and allegedly feels like fire in your veins, according to Dr. Derek Uhey. Luckily, these creatures are typically very docile, and will not bite if not threatened. These little guys are vital for the desert ecosystem, so leave them be to do their work, and they'll leave you alone.
