The Dumbest Crime In Arizona State History
Arizona is no stranger to weird and dumb crime. We were the home to some of the most jaw-dropping robberies, murders, and negligence in the days of the Wild, Wild West, and it doesn't seem much has changed since then.
Now, a massive scandal has come to light that has Attorneys calling this the dumbest crime in state history.
Ill-Conceived, Short-Sighted, and Audacious
In November of 2024, Elizabeth Gutfahr stood trial in Tucson's Federal Court, being accused of embezzling $38 Million from Arizona taxpayers. Gutfahr was the Treasurer for Santa Cruz County, and used this position to "borrow" taxpayer money for her own gain.
She would take what she considered to be surplus funds, and invest them into her family, buying fancy cars, real estate, and cattle with the hopes of raising her personal net worth, and then placing her excess funds back into taxpayer circulation.

What Now?
Gutfahr's own Attorney seemed to think this plan was as stupid as the rest of us, stating "Ms. Gutfahr committed one of the dumbest, ill-conceived, short-sighted, and most audacious crimes in Arizona state history. Her scheme was not well-planned. She made no real effort to conceal her actions. Even a cursory review of financial records or publicly available information would have quickly uncovered her crimes."
That being said, it took nearly 10 years to uncover her crime, and by that point, it was too late. Her remaining assets are being sold off to attempt to recoup the debt, but it will only cover a fraction of the millions she swindled from Arizona . She stands trial for sentencing on June 23rd.
