Can You Legally Shoot A Home Intruder In Arizona?
The opening to Chad Stahelski's 2014 masterpiece John Wick is one of the greatest in history. Armed robbers attempt to break into the titular character's house, only to find he's more than capable of, shall we say, disposing of them.
Many believe that they could do the same, if put in a similar situation, but how legal is it really to defend yourself and your property by any means necessary?
"Stand Your Ground" Laws in Arizona
Let's get one thing out of the way. There is technically no "Stand Your Ground" law here in Arizona, at least not by that name. The principle, however, still applies. ARS 13-405 allows you to protect yourself at all costs, as long as they are legally allowed in the area where the incident takes place.
This can range from pepper spraying an assaulter all the way to taking deadly force against someone attempting to commit second degree murder.

Taking Action Against Home Invaders
The easy answer is: yes. If someone breaks into your home, you are allowed to take action against them under Arizona law. This isn't a catch-all solution, however, as there are specific requirements to taking deadly force.
This is only legal if the intruder is armed, or has or has threatened to hurt or murder someone in the home. If you do decide to take deadly force, you must be able to prove the intruder was intending to inflict harm on you or someone else in the home. So long story short, if you or your family's lives are at risk within your home, you are allowed to shoot, stab, spray, or do whatever you need to to keep yourself safe.
