Arizona Is Making A Big Step Forward For Animal Rights
I LOVE animals. There's something otherworldly about even the most common species, so much life behind eyes that can't communicate it with us.
There are unfortunately some people who don't recognize the life these creatures show, and are unable to show empathy towards even the cutest dogs and cats. Arizona's finally taking a stance against these monsters.
Animal Cruelty is on the Rise in Arizona
Over the past two years, the Arizona Humane Society has noticed a troubling trend: calls are up, WAY up. 2024 saw one of their highest years on record, with 16,000 calls for service. This included 10,000 animal cruelty cases, a 29% increase from previous years.
This is unacceptable. We share the earth with these creatures, we don't hold domain over them like an angry god. That is, unfortunately, not how many think, but Arizona politicians are currently hard at work trying to remedy this problem.

Arizona is Changing Their Animal Cruelty Laws
Early in 2025, Senator Shawnna Bolick pushed forward SB 1234, which she believes will help cut down on animal cruelty rates drastically.
The bill makes a few huge changes, such as expanding what counts as a "domestic animal", adding in mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. It also considers failing to get correct medical attention for your pet as animal cruelty. Lastly, the bill defines "cruel neglect" as a punishable offense. Cruel Negligence is defined by the bill as failing to provide proper shelter, food, and water for any animal under your care.
The bill is currently headed to the Senate, where they will hopefully push it forward, and make Arizona a safer state for our fluffy best friends.
