Former Hospital

In its early days, this hotel served as the United Verde Hospital, a state-of-the-art hospital built in 1927 to serve the miners in the community. The hospital had an elevator, a fireproof structure, and lots of modern equipment.

The hospital is reported to have had thousands of deaths, most tied to mining injuries, respiratory issues from underground dust, pneumonia, influenza, and complications from long‑term exposure to heavy metals. Mining accidents were common, and the hospital routinely treated blast injuries and shaft falls. After the mines started closing down in 1953, the hospital closed as well.

Hotel History

The building was bought in 1994, reopened as the Jerome Grand Hotel in 1996, and over the years it has gained a reputation as one of Arizona’s most haunted places. Several deaths have been recorded since it became a hotel.

One involved an elderly guest who passed away from natural causes in his room. Another guest died after falling from a balcony, an incident documented by authorities but not treated as paranormal by the hotel. Since becoming the Jerome Grand Hotel, this building has gained quite a reputation for its lingering atmosphere and the stories guests continue to share.

Strange Encounters

Many people believe the Jerome Grand Hotel is Haunted. One of the hotel's resident ghosts is often tied back to the 1935 death of Claude Harvey, a maintenance man crushed by the old self-service elevator in the basement. Some people believe he was murdered because the elevator was working fine.

Guests often mention activity in Room 20, known for the “ghost cat,” and Room 32, where footsteps and knocking are frequently reported. The third floor and the old elevator area are also said to be haunted. Today, the hotel’s legacy continues to draw in hundreds of visitors every year.
