DoorDash’s No-Tip Message Sparks Outrage in Arizona
DoorDash to Arizona Customers About Tipping
When you order from DoorDash, you'll be prompted to enter a tip. Before you decide to bypass that field and tip in cash, DoorDash will warn you that your order might take a lot longer to arrive.
No Tip, Slow Service
As you place your order through the DoorDash app, you'll see a new pop-up. If you haven't entered a tip amount greater than $0, the warning reads:
“Orders with no tip might take longer to get delivered — are you sure you want to continue?”
Adding a Tip in Advance to Add Incentive
Your DoorDash driver, known as a Dasher by the company, will choose which orders to pick up based on several factors.
When you place your order, all the Dashers in your area get an alert. They also get a message with the guaranteed rate they'll earn when they accept a delivery. The app assigns different values to deliveries. Factors like time, distance, and desirability of the order, help the driver determine whether it's worth their time.
The app also factors in the tip you enter when you place to order. So, if the tip you enter is zero, your order desirability goes down.
The Dashers can't see the exact tip amount or the breakdown of exactly what they'll earn until after the delivery has been completed.
Figuring Out Which Deliveries to Take
Even though the driver can see the exact amount they'll make from a delivery ahead of time, experienced drivers can tell numbers if a tip hasn't been added based on the delivery estimate.
Got all day to wait? Don't mind cold food? Then don't add a tip when you order food from DoorDash.
Arizona Customers' Opinions on Tipping
A lot of Arizona customers are angry about this new twist on delivery. As someone who prefers to tip in cash AFTER the service has been rendered, I find this not only irritating but a possible disincentive for drivers to do a good job.
And I'm not alone. When we asked about tipping on our social media pages, most people responded that they like to add a generous tip, but only after they're satisfied with the service.
For now, you'll have to add a tip that's at least more than $0 when you place your order. You can always tip more in cash or add more for a job well done after delivery.
According to the DoorDash App Support, you can add a tip for up to 30 days after an order is complete.
