There's no denying it: the last few national political cycles have been very contentious. The fallout from the political wrangling launched Cochise County into the spotlight, but not in a very flattering way.

CNN reported on this problem, shining a national spotlight on some of the issues in our county.

Who Was Involved in the Ballot Paper Decision

With the uncertainty of the last few elections, conspiracy theories began to take root. Anecdotal stories about election fraud and ballot tampering were running rampant. According to Politifact.com, many claims made during the 2020 election have since been debunked.

Officials in Cochise County couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't right, and they scrambled to try to get ahead of the issues. As a result, the county spent nearly $200,000 on “fraud-proof” ballot paper to help ensure the security and integrity of the election.

However, they missed the legal certification deadlines, so the paper is essentially a useless paperweight in every conceivable way. In this instance, officials spent thousands of dollars of taxpayer money.

Who Purchased the Paper?

CNN interviewed Cochise County Recorder David Stevens about the purchase. Stevens authorized the purchase of the “fraud-proof” ballot paper. He said he did so in response to local concerns about the integrity of the election. Some other county officials supported this decision, but the actions have been roundly criticized by state leaders.

Broader Impact on Election Trust and Resources

There's a bit of irony baked into this event. In an attempt to assuage fears about the election fraud conspiracy, this event has shed an unflattering light on local government waste.

Rumors and conspiracy theories can drive costly government decisions, waste public funds, and erode our trust in the democratic processes. Unfortunately, this warehouse full of useless paper didn't do anything to help the cause.
