It isn't every day you meet a dog with the same name as you... Well, maybe for most people it isn't, but I've met more dogs with my name than I have people. I saw a post the other day on Facebook highlighting Harley, a black Labrador retriever Shepard mix who has been at the Nancy J Brua Animal Care Center for a couple of months. When I saw a picture of her, I couldn't help but want to meet her.

Harley meeting Harley

The first thing I noticed about Harley was her insane energy. Despite being 7 years old, she has enough energy to run a marathon. She was also extremely friendly! She loved being held and petted, like most dogs, and had no problems being around new people.
She knew how to sit and was very eager to do so when someone had a ball or a treat in their hand. She understands how fetch works, and getting her to sit before I threw the ball was no problem. The problem was that she liked to run around with the ball after retrieving it, before bringing it back.
I got to give her some treats, which she took politely and gracefully. When dogs and other people walked by, she didn't bark, or growl, or freak out in any capacity, showing me she's a dog with a good temperament.

What do other people have to say about this dog?!

Considering the fact she has been at the animal care center for a few months, quite a few workers and volunteers have met and spent time with her. Here is what I learned from them!

She loves to go for walks, jogs, and hikes.

She is curious and loves to sniff around and explore.

She is great with people! She loves humans and is very patient when on a leash.

She is also a super attentive dog! She comes when called and almost always wants to know what you're up to.

Why hasn't she been adopted?

The animal shelter had said despite her great behavior with humans, she can be a bit picky about her dog friends. One of the people I talked to believes that may be one of the reasons she is still there. "People want an easy dog." She told me. And while Harley isn't a difficult dog, I see what she means. If you can't grantee a new dog will get along with other dogs, the thought of taking it home can be nerve wrecking.

Another reason she hasn't got adopted might be because she is an older, black dog. The Nancy J Brua Animal Care Center has a lot of black dogs, and despite her big personality and energy, she might be simply getting overlooked.

Take her Home!

If you are someone who likes getting out, going hiking, and going for walks, Harley would make a great companion for you! The adoption fee at Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Center is $75 for dogs.

Anyone who is looking for a friendly, energetic dog to keep them company should swing by the animal shelter and say hi to her! She is a good girl who deserves a good home!

The Nancy J. Brua animal shelter is located at 6799 E Highway 90 in Sierra Vista. They are open from 10-5 Tuesday-Friday, and open at noon on Saturday. Even if you don't go home with Harley, you may find a dog or cat there that is perfect for you, so don't be shy, go say hi!
