What is ‘Earthing’ and Why Does Flagstaff Care?
I think most people would agree, we're not as connected with our planet as we used to be. Earth has simply become a plot of land for us, and not the miraculous and beautiful creation we get to experience every day.
One new practice is convincing people to return, and Flagstaff has moved to capitalize on it.
What is "Earthing"?
In college, I was friends with a guy who was just like you and me. Except, he never wore shoes. Ever. Why would he do this? He's not a Hobbit. Well, he was closer to Hobbits than we are at least. He practiced "earthing" a technique meant to bring us closer to Mother Earth.
The process revolves around the concept of connecting ourselves with the earth. The theory goes, that by walking barefoot, especially on natural soil, the earth will flow electrons into our body, in other words, grounding us. This process is meant to deepen your connection with the earth around you.

The Barefoot Trail
Opening in July 2024, Flagstaff's Barefoot Trail is this theory put into practice on a large scale. For only ten dollars you can take off on a journey of exploration and reconnection.
The trail is lined with a thin layer of sand to ensure you stay comfortable your whole hike. Along the path, there are various activities such as rock climbing, zip-lines, and mud puddles to squish your feet in.
This is a trail made for anyone who wants to get even closer to Mother Nature, or just those curious about the effects of earthing! Shoes are not prohibited, but it is recommended to head down the trail with your toes out.
