No matter where you live in the United States, it's a guarantee you've gotten upset at someone's driving ability. It's quite common to see someone going 10 miles under the speed limit or changing lanes without warning almost every day.

The most you can think at that point is "man, they're a really stupid driver", and luckily, Arizona actually has a law that attempts to crack down on that.

What is the "Stupid Motorist Law"?

Passed in 1995, Statute §28-910, otherwise known as the "Stupid Motorist Law", hopes to punish drivers that don't think before they make decisions. Specifically, this is meant to target drivers that bypass police barricades or warning signs.

This is primarily used during monsoon season, when the rains will flood portions of the road, making them hazardous for drivers to pass. Unfortunately, a non-insignificant portion of the population will bypass these warnings and face the consequences of it.

The Consequences of Being Stupid

In the event you bypass the warnings, you're likely to get your vehicle caught in a flooded area, and unable to move it. This is Statute §28-910's punishment. In the event you are caught in a flood after ignoring you'll likely have to be rescued.

If this is the case, you will be financially responsible for reimbursing the cost of the rescue, as well as being slapped with a ticket and fine for reckless driving. In the 30 years of this law's existence, no one has yet to be charged, but you really don't want to be the first, do you?
