A friend at a school told me the aftercare program bans kids from using Roblox, even during free time. Curious, I looked into why. Roblox looks fun for kids: they can play and even make games. Since it's designed for children, you'd expect strong safety protections.

“It’s not a great place,” she said. “Our school blocks the site.”

What is Roblox?

Roblox describes itself as an online space to “create, share, and play millions of user-generated experiences.” The company says it’s a unique spot for gamers and game creators. It’s a creative platform for kids to play and make games, but it’s faced criticism for not protecting users well enough.

Roblox says it has age-based safety features, content ratings, chat restrictions, moderation, and parental controls for families. The company also offers guides for parents and educators to encourage digital safety and responsible behavior.

Arizona Pressures Roblox Over Child Safety

Still, many parents and educators say Roblox isn’t doing enough. Now, Arizona is getting involved. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes is taking legal action against Roblox, a platform hugely popular with kids and teens.

Roblox isn’t just a game. Kids can play, create, chat, and spend virtual currency called Robux. Millions of users are under 13.

Mayes filed a petition to force Roblox to comply with a child safety investigation under the Arizona Consumer Fraud Act, similar to her lawsuit against TikTok. Officials say Roblox hasn’t fully explained how it protects kids from predators and inappropriate content. Critics warn that its social features can let strangers contact minors.

Why Are Officials Worried?

Mayes’ office says there’s evidence Roblox has long known predators target children on the platform, and kids can still access sexual or violent content. Child safety advocates warn predators may use games and chat to build trust with kids, then move conversations to less regulated apps like Discord or Snapchat.

Predators may then ask for personal information, explicit images, or in-person meetings, as reported by CBSNews.com.

More States Sue Roblox

Arizona isn’t alone. Kentucky, Louisiana, and other states have also sued Roblox for allegedly failing to protect kids from predators.

Florida and families nationwide have filed lawsuits too, with many cases consolidated in California federal court.

Roblox disputes many allegations and says it’s improving safety tools, moderation, and age verification features. As a reminder, these are allegations; nothing has been proven in court yet. The best approach is to know what your kids do online and talk with them about safety.
