There is one new trend, however, that could pose a safety risk. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is advising against this sparkly new trend.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a new warning:

Warning: applying decorative decals, such as rhinestones, on steering wheels can cause significant injury or death.

Why Bedazzling Your Steering Wheel is Dangerous

Rhinestone decals may look cute in the center of your steering wheel or on the passenger-side dashboard, but they could be deadly.

If the airbags deploy in a crash, the force can turn those beautiful, glittering gems into a dangerous projectile, and can result in serious harm.

Why It Matters

The NHTSA reported that at least one driver lost sight in one eye. The rhinestones dislodged from her steering wheel when her airbag deployed during a crash, causing permanent injury.

The NHTSA is advising drivers not to purchase rhinestone steering wheel decals for any type of vehicle. If you already have them, you should remove them immediately.
