Is This the Most Dangerous + Confusing Intersection in Sierra Vista, Arizona?
Not long ago, driving in Sierra Vista and Cochise County was a breeze. Most drivers were polite and courteous. Compared to some places in the nation, getting around town was relatively easy.
I was surprised to learn Arizona had been voted the rudest in the nation when it came to local drivers. Incidents of road rage are on the rise here at an alarming rate.
Now that the Snowbirds are returning to our roadways, Arizona drivers will have to be even more vigilant.
The Worst Road in Sierra Vista
It seems like every time you turn around there's another traffic accident. There is one place in Sierra Vista that seems like a hot spot, almost like it attracts everything from fender benders to t-bones.
While the area in front of Target and Fry's Food has been voted the worst road in Sierra Vista many times, the intersection nearby at Fry and Highway 90/92 actually seems to work better than some in town.
The road is so bad, this photo from Google Maps Street View even shows the uneven, rutted mess. If you've driven this nightmare, you know this image doesn't begin to do it justice.
This road is one of the most traveled in Sierra Vista, which might explain part of the reason it's in such bad shape. It's just past what is likely the busiest intersection in town, the Fry Boulevard/Highway 90/Highway 92 bypass.
No matter when you travel this part of town, it's always busy. Somehow, this intersection seems to move like a well-oiled machine most of the time.
You may have to wait your turn. You often have to wait for pedestrians to cross. But when it's your turn, it's surprisingly safe.
The Most Dangerous Intersection in Sierra Vista
If you've ever driven down by the mall, you've probably noticed this area of town is a challenge.
It may seem counterintuitive, but this may be the most dangerous intersection in all of Sierra Vista. The streets leading up to the intersection are curved. One part of the road leading up to the light sits on a hill.
Both of these things make it hard for drivers to gauge the true distance they need to estimate when turning left or crossing the intersection and it's led to many accidents over the years.
The lack of visibility on the hill coming from one direction on Avenida Cochise, and the awkward curve leading from the mall and the other direction make this a tough distance and a place ripe for accidents in one of the busiest places in town.
