Arizona is Bracing for a Tough Summer Travel Season
I’ve been fantasizing about a summer getaway. I say ‘fantasizing’, rather than planning, because at the rate gas prices are going up, I don’t think I can afford to go anywhere this summer.
Why Are Gas Prices Still So High This Summer?
If, like me, you’re thinking about hitting the road this summer, how are you planning to get there? Driving? Flying? Walking?
According to AAA, the cost of gasoline has jumped more than a dollar a gallon in Arizona since last month. Global oil supply disruptions are trending up due to the conflict in the Middle East. In fact, U.S. jet fuel prices recently jumped from $2.50 to $3.99 per gallon in just two weeks. AP News reports that supply issues in the Strait of Hormuz are to blame.
No matter where you’re going or how you’re planning to get there, unless you’re mounting a peace walk on foot, you’re in for a wild and expensive ride.

Are Airline Tickets Getting More Expensive?
As fuel costs rise, so do ticket prices. AP News reports that U.S. airlines are warning that airfare increases are imminent as fuel prices ripple through the industry.
Even though some reports show dips in airfare during certain seasons, the long‑term trend for this summer points toward higher prices, especially for international routes that burn more fuel.

Will TSA Lines and Airport Delays Be Worse This Year?
It’s almost as if the universe just wants us to stay home this summer. Travel in general is becoming an expensive endeavor, but the TSA snarls are making the experience miserable.
The TSA is already seeing record‑breaking crowds, screening 2.99 million passengers in a single day, more than at any time in history, according to the US Department of Transportation.
Add in staffing shortages, aircraft supply issues, and extreme weather, and you have a perfect storm for delays and cancellations. A recent survey found 48% of U.S. travelers experienced a flight disruption in the past six months.
Should You Expect More Canceled Flights?
More flight disruptions are landing every day, and it’s just going to get worse, according to Newsweek. Airlines are still dealing with aircraft shortages, over‑scheduling, and lingering operational challenges. The extreme weather isn’t helping, either. Experts say travelers should be prepared for “major travel meltdowns.”
I’m beginning to rethink my getaway plans. It looks like I’ll be traveling from my kitchen to my living room this summer. At least I won’t have to buy a new swimsuit!
