Sierra Vista Will Fine Anyone with Dogs Running Off Leash
I love taking my dogs on outings. They get so excited just riding in the car. I worry about them when we’re in public, though, so I always make sure they’re not only on a leash, but they stay on a leash.
I know it’s great to watch them run with wild abandon, but I keep them tethered. It’s important for everyone’s safety: your dog, other dogs, and people in the area.
The City of Sierra Vista is cracking down on unleashed dogs. Here’s what you need to know to avoid a fine.

Why Sierra Vista Is Enforcing Leash‑Laws
Beginning this month, the Sierra Vista Police Departmentwill increase patrols in parks, sports fields, and other public spaces to make sure dogs are properly leashed, according to a press release.
Officers will issue warnings or citations to anyone with an unleashed dog. This follows Sierra Vista’s City ordinance requirements.
Fines in Sierra Vista can jump up quickly.
- $40–$75 for a first offense
- $75–$150 for a second
- $150–$250 for a third
There’s more. You may be responsible for restitution if your dog causes injury or damage to anyone or anything.

Why Leash Laws Matter for Public Safety
Leash laws are an important part of community safety. According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, dog bites are a preventable public‑health issue. Keeping dogs restrained significantly reduces the risk of bites and injuries. Even friendly dogs can react unpredictably when startled, overstimulated, or approached by children or other pets.
Animal shelters in Southeastern Arizona agree: keeping your dog on a leash can help officers respond more effectively to emergencies. It also keeps your dog safe. If they’re running around, they risk injury from traffic or other dogs.
