Costco’s Vail Location Promises Shorter Trips for Cochise County Shoppers
I’ve often asked my listeners and social media audience which stores and businesses they’d like to see in Cochise County, and which stores they’re willing to travel to Tucson to shop at. The top answers are always Costco, Sam’s Club, and Trader Joe’s.
With this announcement, it looks like we’re going to get a little bit of relief. Don’t get too excited just yet. Costco doesn’t yet have plans to build in Cochise County, but shoppers will be able to split the distance.
Why Build a Costco in Vail, Arizona?
Costco has officially submitted plans for a brand‑new warehouse and fuel station at 9748 E. Old Vail Road, right in the booming Rita Ranch/Vail area. According to reports, the store is slated to open around mid-summer 2027.
So why is Costco planning to build in Vail? The answer is simple: the area is exploding with new homes, but retail hasn’t kept up.
Residents have been begging for more shopping options, and Costco clearly sees the opportunity. If you’ve ever been to a Tucson Costco, you know how busy they are; no matter the day or time, they’re always bustling.

Adding this location to the far southeast of Pima County will relieve the pressure and serve thousands of new households moving into Vail and Rita Ranch. The location also splits the distance between Cochise and Pima Counties. It would be a 30-minute drive from Benson, and only about an hour from Sierra Vista.

How Will This Help Shoppers From Sierra Vista?
I love to shop at Costco, but hate the long drive. Having a more convenient location makes me happy. Right now, Sierra Vista shoppers have to trek all the way to Tucson to the Grant Road or Kino locations. A Vail Costco would cut out a big chunk of that drive, making a shopping run a little easier.
Plus, it ignites a spark of hope that someday Cochise County could get its own store. Right now it’s a dream, but it feels like we’re one step closer.
