What Cochise County Residents Say Is Going Wrong Locally

I asked a simple question on our local Facebook page Thursday morning: "What are some things in Cochise County that you think are heading in the wrong direction?"

The answers poured in. This question must have touched a nerve because even as I write this, the list of answers continues to grow. There was a wide range of responses, but a few themes exposed hot-button topics for our social media followers across Sierra Vista, Benson, Willcox, Huachuca City, Bisbee, and beyond.

Water Concerns Dominate The Conversation

More than anything else, residents expressed deep concerns about water. Most agreed that our area needs to attract more jobs and development, but they had major concerns about the cost of expansion across the area.

Several commenters pointed to proposed solar developments, large agricultural operations, dairy farms, and the potential for future data centers as projects that could place additional strain on local resources.

"We don't have the water for them," wrote Ronda. Connie echoed a similar concern, saying local leaders seem to show "no concern for water issues as long as taxes roll on."

Growth, Development And Trust In Government

There doesn’t seem to be a long-term vision for Cochise County, and the answers reflected that problem. Many responses reflected skepticism about local decision-making.

Some residents questioned whether growth is happening responsibly, while others criticized the Cochise County Board of Supervisors, saying they’re “too pro business” and don’t seem to consider the whole picture. Others expressed concerns about transparency, development projects, and long-term planning that appeared throughout the discussion.

Healthcare And Good-Paying Jobs

Another common complaint was the lack of qualified medical services.

"You have to go to Tucson for almost everything medical," wrote Annette, a sentiment that received support from others who said long trips for healthcare are especially difficult for seniors and people with disabilities.

Residents are also frustrated by a lack of economic opportunities, according to many posts. Matthew summed up the feeling by writing, "We get promises of the next big employment opportunity but only get fast food restaurants."

Crime, Traffic And Everyday Frustrations

Not every concern was about major policy issues. Everyday issues are on the minds and in the hearts of many who expressed their opinions.

Commenters mentioned crime, theft, homelessness, traffic, bad drivers, and Flock cameras. As Mark put it: "Bad drivers." A nod to the increase in road-related issues in our area.

Taken together, the comments paint a picture of a community that cares deeply about water, growth, healthcare, and the future direction of Cochise County.
