Arizona’s Desert Is Hiding a Game‑Changing Secret
Last week, I went on a short girls' weekend in Southern California. I usually take the I-10 when heading west, but this time I visited a town just north of the Mexican border, so I took the I-8 instead.
If you’ve ever taken that drive, you know it’s a long, empty stretch of highway. Most of the scenery is farmland and sand dunes, and between Casa Grande and Yuma, it’s mostly open desert and big sky.
The wide-open space and constant sunshine make it a great spot for huge solar farms. Rows of mirrored panels stretch out from the sand, collecting energy from the sun.

How Much Solar Power Does Arizona Produce?
Arizona is one of the top states in the country for generating solar power.
In 2024, Arizona added 1,793 megawatts of new solar capacity. The state now ranks sixth nationally in total solar capacity and third in battery storage, with over 90 large solar projects built in the last ten years.

Why Is Arizona the Ideal Place for Solar Energy?
These solar farms sit just outside Yuma. Yuma is called the "Sunniest Place on Earth" because it has more sunny days each year than any other place. With over 300 sunny days a year, it makes sense to turn all that sunlight into energy.
These energy farms take advantage of the perfect conditions and help Arizona use less fossil fuel while building long-term energy independence.

What New Projects Or Research Are Happening?
In 2024, the Arizona Corporation Commission approved or helped add 4,700 megawatts of new energy capacity. About 82% of that, or 3,850 megawatts, comes from solar and battery storage. This is part of Arizona’s effort to move toward cleaner, more reliable energy.
What Does The Future Of Natural Energy Look Like In Arizona?
Arizona is set for big growth in renewable energy. Federal and private investments are expected to bring $4.1 billion to large clean power projects and storage by 2030. This will create jobs and accelerate the adoption of renewable energy.
With so much sunshine and innovation, Arizona’s future looks brighter than ever. Our state is leading the way in solar power and clean energy; there’s a lot to be optimistic about.
