First, it's part of the United States ... duh. It was the 48th "territory" to become a state in 1912. So, it's really not that old.
At one point in time, it was part of Mexico, but before that, it was home to some of the United States' first inhabitants. In fact, it was home to some of the oldest inhabitants on the North American continent.
Only 15% of the state is privately owned, with the remaining land belonging to the national parks and public.
Arizona's landscape is diverse. From high mountain tops, to extreme desert areas. If you're visiting the state, it can totally feel like a different state depending on where you're visiting.
