Should the Monday After Super Bowl Be a Holiday?

After 272 games and each of the 32 NFL teams playing 17 games apiece over the course of the 18-week season, our Big American Sports Ball contest is ready to be settled.

Super Bowl LVII (that's Super Bowl 57 for the Roman Numerically challenged) is set to be played on Sunday night, right here in Arizona. It's all going down at the State Farm Stadum in our home state in Glendale, Arizona.

The Chiefs vs. The Eagles

In Arizona, the Kansas City Chiefs versus the Philadelphia Eagles kick off at 4:30 Sunday afternoon, which seems really late, even considering we're watching this go down in Mountain Time. I can't imagine what it must be like for our east coast friends who have to wait until 6:30pm and wrapping up well after 10pm.

The big game is anticipated by so many of us. Whether you're geared up to watch the game's commercials or beyond excited to see Rihanna's half time performance, this is guaranteed to be a late night. Of course, most of us watch the big from kick-off to the moment the Vince Lombardi Trophy is handed over. Big or small, this is a national party and a late night.

What Arizona Thinks

Should "Superbowl Monday" be a state or federal holiday? According to Sports Illustrated, two Tennessee state legislators introduced House Bill 1463 and Senate Bill 1344 hoping to formally name "Super Bowl Monday" a new, official state holiday. Since Arizona knows how to throw a party, I asked you how you planned to celebrate and if you thought we should take up the mantle and make Monday a holiday, too.

Most of our answers were simply: "YES".

Javier told me he and his crew get together every year and, "eat like there’s no tomorrow". His family and friends have a tradition of getting together with a big potluck. After the Super Bowl, they stick around and play games.

Ashley thinks the Monday after Superbowl should be a holiday or the game should be moved to a little earlier in the day. She and her kids end up with a long day and it makes the next day pretty rough.

Suzi has a friend who goes all out for what calls "the best football party on earth". Her friend sets up about 10 TVs in his backyard. He supplies amazing food and beverages, yard games, gas and wood fire pits, plus a trampoline and playground to keep the kids busy. She says it's more of a friend's reunion party with football added.

Only one user thought taking Monday off might be a little ridiculous and I can't fault her logic!

Another Facebook user, also named Ashley, answered this way: "No. The Superbowl is not a holiday. Like my grandma always says, "If you can't handle your liquor, put the bottle down!" Superbowl is just another excuse to get people together, eat, yell at people who CANNOT hear you, and drink."
