‘Frightening’. Arizona is 16th Deadliest State for Truck Drivers
This is not good news for Arizona.
According to a study by the Parrish Law Firm, Arizona comes in as the 16th deadliest state for truck drivers.
According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), in 2022, there were 2,760 big rig crashes, resulting in 111 fatalities.
The study analyzed data from the US Department of Transportation, which examined the number of truck driver collisions in every state. They calculated the number of casualties per billion miles driven.
Scary: 4 Arizona Truck Stops on "Do Not Stop" List!
Here’s the result of the analysis:
- For every million miles driven in Arizona, there were 1.18 truck driver deaths.
- That’s more than twice the rate of the fourteen safest states and over five times the rate of the safest state, Maine, which had only 0.21 deaths per million miles driven.
While Arizona’s truck driver fatality rate is cause for concern, the Grand Canyon State is still less than half the rate of the most dangerous state. That dubious distinction goes to our neighbor to the east, New Mexico.

New Mexico's Staggeringly Poor Road Safety Record
New Mexico has a staggering 2.77 deaths per million miles. We still have a lot of work to do to make Arizona's roadways safer, but the good news is we're nowhere near the bottom of the list.

Arizona also scored better than neighboring states, Nevada, California, Utah, and Colorado, in terms of truck driver safety.
