Adopting a dog from the Nancy J Brua Animal Care Center in Sierra Vista is easier than ever right now. The shelter is waiving dog adoption fees through November 14 to help alleviate overcrowding and fulfill its mission of finding loving homes for pups in need.

Why Are Dog Adoptions Free Right Now?

The shelter is packed to the paws right now. According to a press release from the City of Sierra Vista, more dogs are being surrendered than adopted, and the Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Center is facing a space crunch.

When this happens, the NJBACC relies on other shelters and rescues for help in Cochise County, but those places are also full.

From now until Friday, November 14, the shelter is waiving its usual $75 dog adoption fee to help these pups find their forever homes faster.

What Do You Get When You Adopt a Dog from the Shelter?

You're not just getting a free dog when you adopt from Sierra Vista's animal shelter. You get a dog who's fully vetted. That means the staff and volunteers at have spent time with the animal.

They know aspects of the dog's personality, such as how they walk on a leash, how they get along with other animals, and sometimes much more. You get a ready-to-snuggle companion.

The best part? If you already have dogs in your home, you can arrange a meet-and-greet to ensure your new companion will fit in with your existing family of pets.

That's not all; each adoption includes sterilization, vaccinations, a physical exam, a City pet license, and a microchip. That’s a whole lot of love and care bundled into one tail-wagging package.

What If I Can’t Adopt Right Now?

There are many reasons you may not be able to commit to a dog right now, but that's okay; you can still get your dog fix.

You can volunteer at the shelter or sign up to foster a dog for any length of time, even as short as one night by hosting a "doggie sleepover".

Even short-term fosters can make a huge difference by giving a dog a break from the shelter. It helps free up space and gives them a taste of home life. Plus, you get bonus snuggles.

“With many families facing rising costs, shelters are seeing an increase in dogs being surrendered,” Animal Control Supervisor Arleen Garcia says. “We encourage owners facing these tough choices to try to re-home their pets independently when possible to reduce stress on animal shelters.”
